Windows and Screens

PaintingWithLight is designed to be used with a video projector connected to your computer.  However, it is possible to use it without one.

PaintingWithLight has two main windows: the work window, which contains all the tools and controls of the application, and an output window, which is the one that goes to the projector.

In order to use PaintingWithLight with a video projector, you need to make sure your computer is in the right display mode:

Windows Vista/7/8

  1. Press Windows Key+P
  2. Choose ‘Extend’

Windows XP

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Display.
  3. On the Settings tab of the Display Properties dialog box, click the monitor icon that represents the monitor you want to use in addition to your primary monitor.
  4. Click to select the Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor check box. After you enable this feature, you can drag items across your screen onto alternate monitors. Or, you can resize a window to stretch it across more than one monitor.

Mac OSX

  1. Go to the Apple menu at the top and open up your System Preferences.
  2. Go to Displays
  3. Click Detect Displays
  4. Turn off Mirror Displays

Ubuntu (with NVIDIA graphics card)

  1. Open System Settings
  2. Open NVIDIA control panel
  3. Select X Server Display Configuration
  4. Click Detect Displays
  5. Click on projector output
  6. Select TwinView
  7. Click Apply
